Every once in a while an artist comes along and truly knocks you off your feet and reminds you why you fell in love with music as an art form in the first place. For us, that happened with George Baines’ debut EP Something Deeper. Taking influence from the worlds of acoustic folk (think Father John Misty dabbling with the inventiveness of Bon Iver), with a sprig of chart-worthy melodica thrown in for good measure, it’s truly a thing of beauty; subsequently showcasing Baines as a natural musical storyteller as well as an artist with a true knack for honest, expansive and shrewd songwriting that truly packs a tender emotional punch. Ever since their brilliant debut eponymous EP back in 2018, we’ve been hooked on the succulent sounds of Blackpool quartet Jekyll. Signed to legendary indie label Fierce Panda, their brand of brilliantly atmospheric indie pop has seen them compared to everyone from British Sea Power to Idlewild – and for good reason. Their latest single, ‘Echoes’, is a brooding slice of wonderfully evocative pop that carries the sort of ethereal nature that made bands like My Bloody Valentine such a tantalising prospect. We’re huge fans of the band, so we decided to speak to lead singer Joel Foster about the single, saving The Social and their beautiful hometown of Blackpool. Continue reading “Talk Show Host: Jekyll”

In just three brilliant singles – ‘Rewind’, ‘A Little Late’ and ‘I’d Be the Worst’ – South West band Farebrother have announced themselves as one of the most exciting indie bands in the country right now. Having supported the likes of indie royalty The Amazons, Anteros, and Baby Strange, they look like they have all the ingredients to go onto to join the indie pop elite. ‘I’d Be the Worst’, in particular, is a grooving delight; fusing Foals-esque math-rock riffs alongside frontman Tom Hunt’s electric vocals. They’ve just released a video for the track, ahead of an exciting headline slot at London’s Notting Hill Arts Club so we decided to catch up with the band.
Italian outfit Weird Bloom is a unique proposition to say the least. Combining the worlds of psych, folk and pop seamlessly to create something truly original, and incredibly weird, Luca, the solo artist behind Weird Bloom, has just released a collaborative EP with Dizzyride, the transatlantic duo consisting of Nico & Zoe. Titled The Flying Pan Club, it’s a sonic journey through the minds of some of the most exciting artists in the world right now. We sat down to speak to Weird Bloom about the EP, translating their sound to the live sphere, and their too much information hangover answer. Continue reading “Talk Show Host: Weird Bloom”
